Soft Pastel Swatching
Hey Everyone,
Welcome to this new section of Sketchbook Shenanigans!
It’s very informal here… The posts will be random and quick!
I just wanted a separate space to just cover art supply chatter.
So, I’ve decided to give soft pastels a real go. I have a cheap set of soft pastel halves from Faber-Castell. They’re not too bad, a bit chalky. I didn’t mind because I used them to create backgrounds. But now I kind of want to really figure out how to actually use them.
The Blick Art Materials soft pastels are artist-grade and very affordable.
One of the things I like about soft pastels is the texture it creates when you wet them. Yes, I said wet. Soft pastels are not water-soluble per se, but it works. Wetting the pastel sets them to a certain degree, adding a little water decreases the chalky dust.
The texture reminds me of Neo Color 2 when activated.
I’m going to sketch a landscape out using soft pastels and see how it turns out.
Will report back with pictures and maybe a time lapse if I remember to hit record.
What has been your experience with soft pastels? Do you hate the mess?
A lot of people don’t like them because of the mess they make, but I like to get my hands dirty when creating, makes me feel like I did something.
