Hey Everyone,
I was MIA last week from the newsletter. I’ve been pondering new ways to show up on Substack, so I’ve been thinking a lot about my subscription model and what I should or should not be offering, I think a monthly art print and some paid content are valuable. Sigh. It’s whatever… I guess something will happen sooner or later, my people will eventually find me.
Anyway, I’m here today and that's all that matters.
I wanted to share some process pics of two paintings I made since the last newsletter published.
I painted this yesterday, (10/26)
I always like to start my paintings with an underpainting of Winsor and Newton-Pale Terracotta. I just really love the color and warmth it brings through.
Then, I sketched out the subject with charcoal, just for placement.
I started with the sky (background) and worked my way to the foreground. I don’t like a plain sky blue sky. I like to add variations of blue/purple and warm colors like orange to my skies.
I used different small brushes to make textures and brush strokes. I also used varied mixes of greens for the trees and vegetation and decided to add some white flowers in the foreground and cobalt blue to the ocean to add some contrast, and that’s it!
I really love how this turned out. I used varied brands of acrylic paint. I’m feeling like painting is becoming “my thing” (one of my things 😆) more and more.
another one
So last weekend, (10/18) I started a painting and finished it the following day.
I used sketchbook drawings as inspiration. Of course, I started with pale terracotta, but after that, I had no plan, I just knew that I wanted to abstract an urban scene.
Below are some process pics:
I’m finding that going back to my sketchbook drawings has really been helping me to stay inspired because I really struggle with finding subjects to draw or paint, even though there are subjects all around us via daily life, I feel like the negative voice from within is always making us think that certain subjects are “un-paintable” and uninteresting. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyday life, the mundane things, the things that you think aren’t interesting, actually are.
If you’re facing the same challenges, have a little sit down with your old sketchbooks and pic some sketches that you love and paint them.
October Member Print
This piece is a digital collage. I enjoyed the process of creating this very much. I started with painting and making my own collage papers, scanning them in (high resolution), and then bringing them into Procreate to cut and create the shapes.
I really like the combination of traditional (getting my hands involved) and digital, this piece is super special and I hope most of you feel the same. 😊
